Most score trackers feel like calculators. DeckScore treats the home screen like a game lobby. Every pill has a layered gradient, an inset highlight at the top, a softened drop-shadow, and a "pressed" state that bounces back. No flat rectangles. No generic system buttons. Just a tactile, card-night-ready interface that rewards tapping.
Design principles

Three languages, one feeling

DeckScore's look isn't cosmetic. Color, motion, and typography work together to make the app feel warm, nostalgic, and a little bit magical: the way a good card night actually feels.

Color · Jewel palette

Eight identities, instant recognition

Each game owns a color: red for Quiddler, gold for Five Crowns, teal for Skip-Bo. Over a few sessions, the palette becomes muscle memory. You tap the game you want without reading a label.

Motion · Soft & celebratory

Every tap, every round earned

Buttons bounce softly when pressed. Score totals tick up. Rounds slide in from the side. When someone wins, confetti pours. Nothing is loud: everything acknowledges that you showed up to play.

Type · Warm & sturdy

Set in a warm geometric sans

Headings are sized for across-the-table readability, not compact density. Numbers use tabular spacing so scores line up on iPad. Every label is tuned so the app reads clearly whether you're up close or passing the device around.

8 Games · One App

Every game, its own jewel

Each card game has its own color, emblem, and scoring rules. Tailored so you focus on playing, not tracking.

Why eight tiles, not a dropdown? Because picking the game is part of the ritual. Each tile is the color of the game's identity, carries its own custom emblem (ABC for Quiddler's word-making, a crown for Five Crowns, stacked cards for Skip-Bo), and ships with scoring rules tailored to that game: phase tracking for Phase 10, meld bonuses for Hand & Foot, word scoring for Quiddler. Tap a color, start playing. That's the whole loop.

The journey

From Quiddler Scorekeeper to DeckScore

What started as a single-game scorekeeper evolved into a full card game companion.

01

Origin

Built as Quiddler Scorekeeper to replace paper tallies during family card night.

02

Expansion

Added Five Crowns, Phase 10, and more as users requested additional games.

03

Rebrand

Rebranded to DeckScore to reflect the app's multi-game identity and broader vision.

04

Launch

Shipped on the App Store as a native iPhone and iPad app built with SwiftUI.

05

Redesign

Relaunched with a vibrant magical-night theme, a new royal app icon, animated starfield, and custom emblems for every game.

DeckScore is built the way a small studio builds apps: slowly, deliberately, with every detail re-opened and polished. Version 1.0.3 wasn't a feature release. It was a complete visual rebuild because the first design, while functional, didn't feel like game night. The current version does.
Built for real game nights

Designed by a player, not a lab

DeckScore started at a kitchen table. Paper scorecards kept getting lost, phone calculators kept getting fumbled, and nobody wanted to be the one doing Five Crowns math in round 9. The first version existed to scratch that itch: just Quiddler, just scoring.

Every feature since has come from actual game nights. The Continue Game button, because someone always puts the phone down mid-round. Game History, because "who won last Tuesday?" is the eternal question. Statistics, because someone in every friend group is that person who needs receipts.
